En 1994, il a été nommé membre de l'équipe de direction de l'entreprise et a assumé la responsabilité des activités de Novozymes A/S dans le domaine de la santé. En novembre 2000, il est devenu président et directeur général de Novo Nordisk A/S, poste qu'il a occupé jusqu'en décembre 2016. Il a obtenu un MSc en foresterie de l'Université royale vétérinaire et agricole de Copenhague en 1981 et un BSc en économie internationale de la Copenhagen Business School en 1983.
