Le secteur de l'alimentation, Ronald Burkle est tombé dedans quand il était tout petit. Dès 13 ans, après l'école, Ron Burkle travaille avec son père au supermarché Stater Brothers de Pomona. Il rentre à la faculté de médecine dentaire, mais il l'abandonne très vite. Il retourne alors au supermarché et grimpe petit à petit les échelons.
En 1981, la société mère décide de vendre la chaîne. Ron saute sur l'occasion et parvient à convaincre un groupe d'investisseurs. Avec le soutien de Berkshire Hathaway, Burkle et son père font une offre d'achat. Celle-ci, jugée trop faible, entraîne son licenciement. Il le vit très mal : « Mon père y avait travaillé presque toute sa vie. Je pensais que l'occasion de posséder une entreprise ne se présentait qu'une seule fois dans une vie et que je l'avais raté ».
En 1986, il fonde The Yucaipa Companies, du nom de la petite ville de Californie du sud où il vit. C'est une société de private equity qui réalise, dans les années qui suivent, des dizaines d'opérations de fusion acquisition d'une valeur de 30 milliards de dollars.
En 1997, Yucaipa fusionne avec Food&Drug Smith Centers. Quelques mois plus tard, Fred Meyer Inc, un détaillant du nord ouest des Etats-Unis commercialisant une large gamme de produits (alimentation, bricolage, bijoux, vêtements, ...) fusionne avec le groupe de Burkle. Ensemble, les deux sociétés possèdent 265 magasins dans 11 états.
Moins d'un an plus tard, le géant Kroger, déjà première chaîne de supermarchés aux Etats-Unis, propose d'acquérir le conglomérat Smith-Fred Meyer pour 13,5 milliards de dollars. Lorsque la fusion est opérationnelle en 1999, la société compte 2 200 magasins dans 31 Etats. Ron Burkle salue l'accord et considère la concentration comme une étape nécessaire vers une concurrence efficace. Bénéfice pour Yucaica : 1,8 milliard de dollars.
Ron Burkle est au board de Yahoo!, de Occidental Petroleum Corporation et de Kaufman & Broad Home. Yucaipa détient une participation de 70% dans McDonald's. Il est en partie propriétaire des Pingouins de Pittsburgh, la ligue nationale de hockey. Ron a également investi dans la société de production de Puff Daddy. En avril 2010, il s'associe aux frères Weinstein et propose 600 millions de dollars pour le rachat du studio Miramax à Walt Disney.
Ron Burkle est un homme d'affaires engagé. Il est connu pour être un fervent démocrate. Il a soutenu Hillary Clinton dans sa campagne présidentielle en participant à la collecte de fonds. Lui et Bill Clinton se sont rencontrés en 1992 et sont aujourd'hui amis. M. Burkle est également proche de plusieurs politiciens comme des sénateurs ou encore le gouverneur de Californie Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Sa fortune s'élève, selon le classement Forbes 2011, à 3,2 milliards de dollars, ce qui fait de lui le 347ème homme le plus riche de la planète.
Ron a deux enfants avec Jan Burkle, Carrie Ann Burkle et Jonathon Burkle. Ron et Jan ont divorcé en 2003 après une période de séparation de 1997-2003.
