Mário Alberto Nobre Lopes Soares was a former Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Government of Portugal from 1976 to 1978.
He was also the President of Portugal from 1986 to 1996.
In addition, he served as a Member-Portugal for the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004.
Prior to his political career, he was the Secretary General of the Socialist Party from 1973 to 1985.
Soares obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of Lisbon.
