Before joining Morgan Stanley, he worked 26 years for Commerzbank and Westdeutsche Landesbank (WestLB) in different locations in Germany, London, and New York.
From 1967 to 1970, he worked as an assistant professor at Hamburg University.
He obtained his high school-leaving certificate (Abitur) in Bremen and went on to study business administration and economics in Hamburg.
After graduating in 1967, he received his Ph.D.
in 1969.
