Jack Ma est le PDG d'Alibaba Group, leader chinois dans l'e-commerce qui compte cinq entreprises de commerce en ligne dont Taobao.com, deuxième site mondial de vente aux enchères derrière eBay et Yahoo China, le moteur de recherche et portail racheté à Yahoo en 2005.
Dans ses jeunes années, Jack Ma était un guide touristique, son excellente maitrise de l'anglais et sa parfaite connaissance de la province de Hangzou dont il est natif lui permettent de prospérer dans ce job pendant plusieurs années.
Diplômé de l'Institut des enseignants de Hangzhou en 1988, Jack Ma enseigne pendant quelques temps avant de créer une agence de traduction qui tourne à plein régime grâce aux entreprises américaines et étrangères qui s'installent de plus en plus en Chine.
C'est à l'occasion d'un voyage qu'il effectue aux États Unis en tant qu'interprète que Jack Ma découvre les ordinateurs et internet. Fasciné, il commande à un ami un site pour son agence de traduction.
De retour en Chine, il emprunte 2000 dollars à des amis et lance le site China pages, considéré comme le premier site commercial du pays. Le site peine à trouver son modèle économique et finit par s'arrêter. Jack Ma décroche un emploi au ministère du Commerce extérieur, un poste qui lui a permis en 1998 de faire la connaissance de Jerry Yang, co-fondateur de Yahoo.
L'envie d'entreprendre sur le net reprend Jack Ma. Cette fois-ci, il parvient à rassembler 60.000 dollars pour le lancement d'Alibaba.com en 1999. Rapidement, la société se positionne comme leader dans le secteur du business-to-business (B2B), La crédibilité acquise permet à Jack Ma de lever la somme de 25 millions dollars, consentie par des investisseurs parmi les plus exigeants comme la banque Goldman Sachs, ou encore l'entrepreneur internet japonais Masayoshi Son.
En mars 2002, Alibaba.com a atteint le million d'utilisateurs et a commencé à générer des bénéfices.
En 2003, Jack Ma se lance sur le marché des enchères en ligne avec Taobao.com, qui signifie "la recherche d'un trésor". Il est rapidement apparu comme un sérieux rival pour eBay. Yahoo, qui suit de près l'évolution d'Alibaba finit par débourser 1 milliard de dollars en 2005 pour entrer dans son capital à hauteur de 40%. En retour, la société Alibaba, évaluée à 4 milliards de dollars prend le contrôle de Yahoo! China.
En 2008, Alibaba.com compte 23 millions de visiteurs dont 65% en Chine. Elle regroupe cinq entreprises : Taobao, le principal site e-commerce CtoC, Alisoft, qui fournit des logiciels pour les entreprises. Alipay, le premier service de paiement en ligne en Chine et bien sûr Yahoo China, un moteur de recherche et portail racheté à Yahoo en octobre 2005.
