Callahan is currently the Director of The Oak Lawn Parks Foundation, a Member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, a Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a Member of the American Rock Mechanics Association.

He received his undergraduate degree from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1970, his graduate degree from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1972, and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1982.
