Timothy D. Cook est, depuis la démission de Steve Jobs le 24 août 2011, le directeur général d’Apple Inc.
Tim Cook a grandi dans l’Alabama. Son père travaillait sur un chantier naval et sa mère était mère au foyer. Diplômé en 1982 de l’université d’Auburn dans l’Alabama en ingénierie industrielle, il décroche brillamment son MBA en 1988 à l’Université de Duke en Caroline du Nord, l’une des plus prestigieuses universités américaines.
Tim Cook a travaillé 12 ans chez IBM, en y supervisant notamment la production et la distribution en Amérique du Nord et en Amérique latine. Il entre ensuite chez Compaq puis devient vice-président chargé de la production, de l’approvisionnement et de la gestion de l’inventaire.
C’est Steve Jobs qui va lui-même débaucher Tim Cook chez Compaq en 1997. Tim Cook rejoint Apple en mars 1998, un an après le retour de Steve Jobs aux commandes. Placé sous l’autorité directe de Steve Jobs, Tim Cook est responsable de la gestion de la chaîne logistique d’Apple, des ventes, du support et du service aux clients, pour tous les marchés sur lesquels est présente l’entreprise.
Tim Cook met alors en place une stratégie bien réfléchie : l’entreprise doit réduire sa gamme de produits ainsi que le nombre de distributeurs et de revendeurs. Autre virage stratégique initié par Tim Cook : la sous-traitance en Asie. Tim Cook est l’homme de la délocalisation chez Apple.
En 2000, Tim Cook prend la direction des ventes internationales, puis en 2004, il prend la tête de la division Macintosh, celle qui est responsable des MacBook, MacBook Pro et iMac. Et là, les résultats parlent d’eux-mêmes : les ventes de Mac n’ont de cesse de progresser. Son ascension est alors fulgurante ; en 2005 il devient directeur général délégué de la firme à la pomme. En Janvier 2007, Cook est promu au COO.
Tim Cook prend la direction par interim de la firme par deux fois, en 2004 (pendant 2 mois) et 2009, alors que Steve Jobs doit s’éloigner pour diverses opérations. C’est en janvier 2011 qu’il reprend les manettes de la firme, passage définitif à partir d’août 2011. Depuis, il a mené la barque d’Apple avec un succès incroyable et a fait tripler la valeur boursière de la marque, ce qui contribue à augmenter sa fortune.
Tim Cook est décrit comme un homme brillant et un travailleur acharné. Moins impulsif que son prédécesseur, il peut, selon ses collaborateurs, paraître émotionnellement détaché et implacable. S’il s’agit d’un homme discret qui ne fait que très peu d’apparitions publiques, plusieurs engagements ont contribué à soigner son image : son coming-out en 2014, sa volonté affichée de léguer sa fortune à des œuvres caritatives après sa mort…
Tim Cook siège également au conseil d’administration de Nike.
