Il a obtenu sa licence en génie mécanique à l'université de Cornell et a obtenu une maîtrise et un Phi Beta Kappa Honors à l'université de Chicago. Il a ensuite fait des études de MBA à la Harvard Business School, dont il a obtenu le diplôme en 1949 avec distinction.
