Deuxième plus grosse fortune de Hongkong juste derrière Li Ka-Shing et 43ème fortune mondiale selon Forbes 2009, Lee Shau Kee est le PDG du groupe Henderson Land Development Company et de Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited. Il est surnommé le Warren Buffett de Hongkong.
Le coup magistral de Lee Shau Kee a été de transférer les avoirs de sa famille de la Chine vers Hongkong avant l'avènement du communisme. En 1948, il débarque à Hongkong et travaille un temps dans l'import export avant de se lancer dix ans plus tard sur le marché de l'immobilier. Il fonde avec d'autres investisseurs de Hongkong Eternal Enterprise Company, une agence immobilière qui lui permet de conclure ses premières bonnes affaires.
Mais Lee Shau Kee voit grand. En 1963, il fonde Sung Hung Kai Properties et part à l'assaut de tout ce qui touche à l'immobilier. Dix ans plus tard, ses activités ont pris de l'ampleur, il décide de restructurer la société immobilière en un groupe aux activités multiples, c'est la naissance de Henderson Land Development Company.
En 1981, le groupe fait son entrée à la bourse de Hongkong.
En 1985, Lee Shau Kee prend le contrôle de la société d'investissement Wing Tai qui devient Henderson Investment.
En 1989, le nouveau tycoon de Hongkong élargit le champs d'action de son groupe en lançant la chaine de magasins Citistore.
En 1992, c'est autour des hôtels d'être incorporés à l'activité du groupe.
En 1995, il crée Megastrength, une société de services de sécurité.
L'enrichissement de Lee Shau Kee accompagne l'essor de Hongkong. Il est un des acteurs majeurs de l'économie de la région. Son groupe détient aujourd'hui la compagnie d'hôtels Miramar & Investment Hotels, l'opérateur gazier Hong Kong & China Gas, l'opérateur de ferry Hong Kong Ferry Company.
En 1993, le Dr Lee Shau Kee a reçu le titre de Docteur honoris causa en sciences sociales de l'université chinoise.
