Dr. McMahan is a Special Advisor at General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, where he focuses on the firm's efforts in the Energy & Resources sector.
He is an experienced energy economist whose practical understanding of industry issues has made him one of the nation's leading experts in the areas of energy markets, strategy and policy.
He currently serves as Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives for IHS Inc., a leading global source of critical information and insight, and as a member of the company's Advisory Board.
In 2002, Dr. McMahan founded Global Energy Decisions, LLC to provide a broad range of strategic business solutions to the energy industry, from upstream through operations, trading, transmission, and distribution.
In 2007, Global Energy Decisions was acquired by Ventyx, a leading business solutions provider to global energy, utility, communications, and other asset-intensive organizations.
Prior positions include founder and CEO of Resource Data International, Inc., and CEO of Financial Times Energy.
Dr. McMahan has held several part-time and honorary academic appointments including, Project Director, Energy, at University of Colorado's Institute of Behavioral Science, Visiting Lecturer in Telecommunications and Society at the University of California at San Diego.
He was a member of the faculty of the Colorado School of Mines Executive Training Institute and served on the Board of Directors of the College of Business at Montana State University.
Dr. McMahan received his BA and PhD form University of Colorado.
