Profil

Dr. Philipp Ther is a Senior Research Associate at The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies.
He is a Professor of Central European History at the University of Vienna.
He is the holder of the Wittgenstein Award, the highest Austrian recognition for outstanding research.
His research focuses on the history of social and economic transformations since the 1980s, on Central and Eastern Europe’s social and cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries, and comparative studies of nationalism, mass flight and migration, and historical theories.
Jointly, the University of Vienna and wiiw collaborate within the newly established interdisciplinary research network ‘Research Center for the History of Transformations’ (RECET).
Funds initially finance RECET from the Wittgenstein Award received by Philipp Ther.
His two recent books on the post-1989 economic reforms and their social impact and the history of refugees and refugee integration in modern Europe have been published in English by Princeton University Press.
Previously, he was a Professor of Comparative European History at the EUI in Florence.
