Gerstel is the founder of ALZA Corp., which was founded in 1968.
He held the title of Co-Chairman, Chief Executive & Financial Officer from 1982 to 1993.

Currently, Mr. Gerstel is the Chairman of Mada Ltd. He was also Chairman of Evogene Ltd. from 2004 to 2021, Chairman of Keddem Bioscience Ltd. from 2004 to 2016, and Director of Symyx Technologies, Inc. from 1995 to 2006.
Additionally, he served as Director of Yissum Research Development Co. Ltd. and Yissum Holdings Ltd. from 2003 to 2015.
He is currently a Director at Itamar Medical, Inc.Mr. Gerstel completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University and holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
