Fondateur et PDG d'Amazon, le géant américain du commerce électronique, Jeff Bezos est considéré comme un des pères fondateurs de l'e-commerce. De l'entreprise fondée en 1995 avec 300.000 dollars empruntés à ses parents, Jeff Bezos a créé le numéro un mondial de la vente en ligne. Pour y parvenir, cet entreprenaute de génie a su exploiter savamment deux talents qu'il possède : celui d'informaticien hors pair et celui de financier aguerri.
Le jeune Jeff Bezos fait ses études au lycée Palmetto de Miami. En parallèle, il suit des cours de Science à l'université de Floride ce qui lui permet de décrocher en 1982 le prestigieux Silver Knight Award. Son talent lui ouvre les portes de l'université de Princeton où il étudie la physique dans un premier temps avant de se tourner vers l'informatique, sa véritable passion.
Son diplôme d'informaticien en poche, Jeff Bezos rejoint la société Fitel, une start up spécialisée dans les finances et les télécommunications. Deux ans plus tard, il est recruté par Bankers Trust Company à New York et en 1990, il est nommé vice-président.
En 1990, Jeff Bezos décroche un poste d'analyste financier chez D. E. Shaw & Co., un hedge fund spécialisé dans les technologies, il y reste pendant quatre ans.
En 1995, Jeff Bezos veut créer la plus grande librairie en ligne au monde. Le projet est ambitieux, mais l'entreprenaute y croit dur comme fer. A cette époque, internet est un des rares domaines à afficher une croissance à 4 chiffres (2300% en 1994). Il déménage alors à Seattle et crée, grâce à son talent d'informaticien, la librairie en ligne Amazon qu'il ouvre au public en 1996. Rapidement, Bezos diversifie ses produits en élargissant son offre à la musique et le cinéma.
En 1997, Amazon entre en bourse. Le cours de ses actions en montagne russe donne le vertige aux investisseurs qui préfèrent observer de loin la stratégie de cet entreprenaute atypique. Le modèle économique conçu par Jeff Bezos s'appuie sur l'investissement plutôt que sur la marge bénéficiaire.
Il faudra attendre 2004 pour enfin voir Amazon dégager ses premiers bénéfices. Entre temps, la firme de Seattle est devenue le plus grand supermarché en ligne au monde.
Jeff Bezos est devenu l'homme le plus riche du monde grâce à Amazon. Début 2019, il surpassait Bill Gates et Bernard Arnault dans le classement des milliardaires.
