Graham W.J.
Beal has been a Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Detroit Institute of Arts since 1999.
Previously, he was Art Gallery Director at Washington University in St. Louis and a Director of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska.
Mr. Beal became Curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 1977 and Chief Curator until 1983.
He was a Director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia until 1984 and Chief Curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art until 1989.
Mr. Beal became a Director of Museum Associates (doing business as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) in July, 1996.
He was a Member of the Federal Advisory Committee on International Exhibitions from 1991 to 1995 and a Member of the Board of Trustees for the Association of Art Museum Directors and Chairman of Art Issues Committee from 2002 to 2004.
Mr. Beal was elected to the Board of Trustees for the American Association of Museums in 2004.
He worked at the University of South Dakota.
Mr. Beal started his museum career at Sheffield City Art Galleries.
He received his degrees in English and Art history from the University of Manchester and the Courtauld Institute of Art.
