PDG et co-fondateur de Blackstone, un fonds de gestion d'investissements privés (private equity), Stephen Schwarzman gère avec ses associés un empire financier qui pèse 140 milliards de dollars d'actifs.
Diplômé de La Yale University en 1969 et de Harvard Business School en 1972, c'est dans la banque d'investissement Lehman Brothers que Stephen Schwarzman débute sa carrière. A 31 ans, il est nommé directeur de la branche fusions et acquisitions.
En 1985, Schwarzman fonde Blackstone avec son associé Peter Peterson, (ex secrétaire d'État au commerce sous Nixon et ex P-DG de Lehman Brothers) et Hamilton James, actuel numéro 2 de Blackstone.
Une mise de 400 000 dollars a été injectée dans la création du fonds d'investissements Blackstone. Initialement axé sur les fusions acquisitions, il s'oriente deux ans plus tard vers la gestion de fonds privés avec l'ambition d'être le leader dans ce secteur. L'arme secrète du groupe : Le LBO (Leverage By Out), une technique qui consiste à faire appel au crédit pour racheter des entreprises en difficultés.
Stephen Schwarzman réalise son ambition de faire un fond avec un très haut rendement puisqu'en 2007, il a reçu près de 400 millions de dollars en primes liées aux performances de Blackstone.
L'introduction en bourse de Blackstone en 2007 a été un succès colossal malgré les polémiques la dénonçant. Les 12,5 % du capital mis en vente ont été pris d'assaut faisant grimper l'action de près de 20% en quelques heures. Pour les co-fondateurs, cela a été le jackpot.
