He was Commercial Finance Loan Officer of the Mercantile Safe Deposit and Trust Co. and Auditor of MNC Financial, Inc. He received a BBA degree in Accounting and Finance from Loyola College in Baltimore.

With Mercantile Bank & Trust as its largest bank, Mercantile Bankshares began operations in September 1970.
