William (Bill) Ackman est le fondateur et le PDG de Pershing Square Capital Management, un fond spéculatif américain qui détient des parts dans Wendy's International et McDonald's Corporation. Il détient également des participations dans Target Corp, deuxième plus importante chaine de discount aux États-Unis.
Titulaire d'un diplôme de Harvard College et d'un MBA de Harvard Business School, William Ackman débute sa carrière en travaillant pour son père dans le secteur immobilier avant de fonder en 1993 Gotham Partners Management Co. La société d'investissement connait des difficultés notamment des ennuis judiciaires qui conduiront à sa dissolution en 2003.
En 2004, William Ackman revient sur la scène financière par la grande porte. Il vient de créer Pershing Square Capital et fait preuve de beaucoup d'activisme en prenant des parts massives au prix le plus bas pour les revendre dans les deux ans maximum. Une vision de court terme souvent critiquée par les médias américains spécialisés. Ses différentes attaques contre certaines sociétés telles que FSA, la filiale américaine de Dexia ou encore MBIA et Ambac dont il a prévu l'effondrement, lui valent de solides inimitiés dans le monde de la finance.
En 2007, William Ackman prend une participation à hauteur de 5 millions (3,5%) dans Sears Holdings, le troisième groupe de distribution aux États-Unis, derrière Wal-Mart et Home Depot.
Le fond spéculatif Pershing Square Capital Management gère environ 2.4 milliards de dollars dont 40% ont été investis en actions de la chaine de fast food MacDonald.
