James Edward "Jes" Staley est un homme d’affaires américain né le 27 décembre 1956 à Boston. Il est connu pour avoir été le Président Directeur Général de la banque d’investissement J.P. Morgan entre 2009 et 2013, puis du groupe Barclays depuis 2015. Il possède un diplôme d’économie avec distinction du Bowdoin College (Maine, Etats-Unis).
Après avoir obtenu son diplôme, il rejoint en 1979 la Morgan Guaranty Trust située à New York. De 1980 à 1989, il y travaille pour la division Amérique latine, où il occupe les fonctions de directeur du financement des entreprises pour le Brésil et de directeur général de la société de courtage brésilienne.
Pendant les années 90, James Staley devient l'un des membres fondateurs de l'activité « actions » de J.P. Morgan. Il y dirige les groupes Equity Capital Market et Syndicate.
En 1999, il est nommé directeur de la division Private Banking qui triplera sa rentabilité en deux ans.
Puis, fort de ces succès, en 2001, il est promu directeur général de J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Au cours de son mandat, les actifs des clients de J.P. Morgan Asset Management passent de 605 milliards de dollars à près de 1,3 billion de dollars.
Pendant son mandat, James Staley est distingué pour son travail sur l'investissement stratégique de J.P. Morgan dans Highbridge Capital Management en faisant partie du groupe des vingt superstars des hedge funds travaillant dans l'entreprise.
En 2009, James Staley est nommé au poste de Président Directeur Général de la banque d'investissement. Il y est responsable de la supervision et de la coordination des efforts internationaux du cabinet dans tous les secteurs d'activité.
En 2013, James Staley quitte la banque J.P. Morgan après plus de 30 ans de services pour rejoindre BlueMountain Capital en tant qu'associé directeur.
En mai 2015, il est élu au conseil d'administration de la société suisse de services financiers UBS en tant que membre du comité des ressources humaines et du comité des risques.
Puis, le 1er décembre 2015, James Staley est nommé Président Directeur Général de la banque britannique Barclays.
Parallèlement, James Staley est membre du conseil d'administration du Bowdoin College, au sein duquel il a réalisé ses études supérieures. Il est également membre du conseil d'administration de la Fondation Robin Hood, de l'Institute of International Finance et du Conseil commercial États-Unis-Chine. Enfin, il est membre permanent du conseil consultatif du Musée américain d'histoire naturelle.
