Threadneedle Investments (Threadneedle), a leading international asset manager, has today launched the Threadneedle Dynamic Real Return Fund to offer investors a multi-asset product which aims to deliver equity-like returns but with up to two-thirds of the volatility.

The long-only, unleveraged fund will take a ‘go anywhere’ approach and can invest across a range of asset classes including equities, fixed income, commodities, property, cash and alternative investments to provide a diversified portfolio. The Fund’s manager, Toby Nangle, will vary the Fund’s asset allocation to exploit pricing differences between asset classes whilst seeking to control volatility. The Fund targets equity-like returns over a three to five year investment horizon, broadly defined as CPI+4%. The Fund will, however, target volatility of up to only two-thirds that of equities over the cycle. Regardless of market conditions, it also aims to provide a positive return over a maximum period of 3 years.

Toby Nangle has 16 years’ investment experience and a proven track record in multiasset fund management. As Threadneedle’s Head of Multi-Asset Allocation, he is responsible for managing and co-managing a range of multi-asset portfolios, as well as providing strategic and tactical input to the Threadneedle asset allocation process.

Toby will be supported by Alex Lyle, Head of Managed Funds and the Asset Allocation Strategy group which, along with Toby and Alex, consists of five senior members of Threadneedle’s investment team: Mark Burgess (CIO), Leigh Harrison (Head of Equities), Jim Cielinski (Head of Fixed Income), William Davies (Head of Global Equities) and Matt Cobon (Head of Currency).

Toby Nangle, Head of Multi-Asset Allocation and manager of the Threadneedle Dynamic Real Return Fund, said: “This strategy aims to blend the best ideas from around the world to deliver equity-like returns for investors, but with controlled volatility. By taking a dynamic approach to asset allocation, and with the flexibility to invest in broad range of asset classes including commodities, property and cash, we expect to enhance risk-adjusted returns.

“As the future of the global economy remains uncertain, and unconventional measures are being used to manage liquidity, active multi-asset products can offer investors a more effective way to balance risk and return than traditional equity / bond funds.”

Gary Collins, Head of EMEA Sales, Wholesale at Threadneedle, said: “The Dynamic Real Return Fund should be used as a true ‘building block’ in a client’s portfolio as it provides the three benefits of capital appreciation, portfolio diversification and reduced volatility.

“Threadneedle has a strong asset allocation heritage, with around 40% of assets under management under some form of asset allocation mandate. This expertise is part of the blueprint behind our successful investment philosophy – looking across asset classes and using the knowledge of our whole investment team to gain a perspective advantage.”
