Conrad Black achète son premier journal, the Eastern Townships Advertiser en1969. En 1970, fraichement diplômé en droit de l'Université Laval à Québec, il achète avec ses partenaires David Radler et Peter White, le Sherbrooke Daily Record.

En 1973, Conrad Black décroche une maîtrise en histoire. Sa thèse portait sur le premier ministre canadien Maurice Duplessis. Publiée en 1976, elle été saluée par les critiques. De cette expérience, Conrad Black a conservé le goût des biographies, il en a rédigé plusieurs, notamment celles de Nixon et de Roosevelt.

Au décès de son père; Conrad Black hérite avec son frère de 22,% de participation dans la holding canadienne Ravelston Corp. En 1978, il en prend le contrôle en injectant 30 millions de dollars. En 1985, il lance un grand chantier de restructuration de Ravelston corp dont le principal atout est une part de 50% détenue dans Hollinger Inc (actuellement Sun-Times Media Group).

Avec la prise de contrôle du quotidien britannique Daily Telegraph commence alors sa véritable conquête des médias. En 1989, il rachète le Jerusalem Post, en 1993, le Sun Times de Chicago, en 1996, c'est au tour de la chaîne de journaux Southam de tomber dans l'escarcelle de Black. En 1998, le quotidien canadien anglophone National Post est lancé par celui qui était à la tête du troisième plus important groupe média du monde. .

Alors que les années 90 ont été celles de la conquête du monde des médias, les années 2000 seront celles de la chute de l'empire. Les ennuis ont commencé lorsque Conrad Black a mis en vente 13 grands journaux canadiens, 126 journaux communautaires, les propriétés Internet et la moitié du National Post à CanWest Global Communications pour 3,2 milliards de dollars.

En mai 2003, un investisseur demande à Hollinger International - contrôlée par une société de Black - d'enquêter sur des paiements effectués à Black et à certains associés. Six mois plus tard, le comité indépendant nommé par Hollinger met à jour des versements « non autorisés » de 32,2 millions de dollars US. Conrad Black démissionne de son poste de P-DG mais demeure Président du Conseil.

En 2005, un mandat d'arrêt a été émis contre Conrad Black par la Cour fédérale de Chicago. Il a été accusé de fraude pour un total de 80 millions de dollars.

Le 10 décembre 2007, il a été condamné à 78 mois de prison et une amende de 125 000 dollars pour abus de biens sociaux et entraves à la justice.
