Fils d'un intellectuel polonais et d'une mère médecin, Romain Zaleski grandit dans la dans une illustre famille de l'aristocratie polonaise. En 1943, son père qui avait rejoint la résistance est arrêté en France avant d'être déporté à Buschenwald. Un an plus tard, c'est sa mère qui est déportée à Ravensbruck.

En 1951, Romain Zaleski obtient un accessit en maths et en physique, ce qui lui ouvre les portes de polytechnique en 1953. En 1958, il est diplôme de l'école nationale supérieure des mines de Paris avant de rejoindre la haute fonction publique. Il travaillera dans différents cabinets ministériels notamment le Ministère de l'Industrie qu'il quittera en 1972 pour Révillon, une société financière où il officiera pendant sept ans.

Dans le cadre de ses missions de consulting qu'il effectuait pour le compte de la Camilog, il est amené à visiter l'usine de sidérurgie de Carlo Tassara qui connait des difficultés de trésorerie. Persuadé qu'une gestion intelligente éviterait le dépôt de bilan, il en prend les rênes et lui évite la banqueroute. Cette première expérience réussie l'encourage à investir dans de multiples sociétés spécialisées dans l'acier ou l'énergie. En quelques années, il est considéré comme un spécialiste du sauvetage des entreprises en péril.

En Italie, il a investi dans de nombreuses banques. Il est un notable, surtout depuis qu'il a permis à EDF de mettre la main sur Montedison empochant au passage un milliard et demi de dollars.

En 2005, Sa rigueur et sa discrétion lui valent d'être un intermédiaire décisif dans la transaction qui a permis le rapprochement de Mittal avec Arcelor dont il était actionnaire.

En 2009, Romain Zaleski a vu sa fortune réduite de plus de 60% passant de la quatrième à la huitième place du classement Challenges. La chute du cours du groupe minier français Eramet et de nombreuses sociétés financières italiennes dont il est actionnaire a eu de lourdes conséquences sur son portefeuille.
