Lorsque le père Ambani décède en 2002, il lègue à ses deux enfants un empire qu'il a bâti en important la fibre synthétique qui remplacera le coton dans diverses industries. Depuis, une guerre fait rage entre les frères ennemis qui se disputent encore l'héritage et rivalisent de coups, chacun voulant être plus riche que l'autre. Au Classement Forbes de 2011, Anil est à la 103éme place.

Avec un Master en gestion des affaires obtenu à la Wharton School de l'université de Pennsylvanie, la même qui avait accueilli Warren Buffett quelques décennies auparavant, Anil Ambani fonde Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group qui englobe Reliance Communications, Reliance Capital, Reliance Energy et Reliance Natural Resources Limited.

Anil est passionné par l'entertainment. Marié à une star de Bollywood des années 80, il consacre de plus en plus d'investissements, avec une idée en tête : la conquête d'Hollywood. Il réalise un de ces meilleurs coups le 20 septembre 2008 en investissant 220 millions de dollars dans Dreamworks, la maison de production de Steven Spielberg.

Mais l'indian tycoon, qui a réussi à augmenter son capital de 24 milliards de dollars en un an, est aussi celui qui a le plus perdu en 2008. Une somme colossale de 30 milliards de dollars est partie en fumée.

Mukesh Ambani est le président, directeur général de Reliance Industries Limited, une compagnie indienne qui détient une position mondiale dominante dans les domaines de l'exploration et de la production minières, du raffinage et marketing, et de la pétrochimie. Le groupe opère également un réseau de distribution au détail qui assure le lien entre des milliers de fermiers et fournisseurs indiens et des millions de consommateurs, par le biais de plus de 1 000 magasins à travers tout le pays.

Mukesh Albani est et le plus grand actionnaire de Reliance avec 48% des parts. Sa fortune est estimée par le magazine Forbes à 27 milliards de dollars en 2011, ce qui le classe à la neuvième place des hommes les plus riches de la planète. Mukesh Ambani est le deuxième homme le plus riche d'Inde derrière Lakshmi Mittal.

Diplômé en Chimie, Mukesh Ambani s'est engagé à l'Université de Stanford pour un MBA mais il n'a accompli qu'une des deux années nécessaires pour le diplôme.

En 1981, Mukesh Ambani rejoint Reliance, l'entreprise fondée en 1966 par son père. A peine a t-il pris les rênes qu'il amorce la réorientation de l'entreprise du coton vers la fibre synthétique, ce qui a permis à la production de Reliance de passer de 1 à 12 millions de tonnes par an.
