Robeco Private Equity is one of the private equity divisions within Robeco Alternative Investments which is the alternative investment division of Robeco Institutional Asset Management BV, a European investment manager founded in 1929 and based in Rotterdam with offices and teams in Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia. In 2001 Robeco became part of the privately-owned Rabobank group (also known as Coöperatieve Centrale Raifeissen-Boerenleenbank BA). In late 2006 Robeco established a strategic alliance for sustainable investing with the Swiss-based group SAM-Sustainable Asset Management. Based in Rotterdam, Robeco Private Equity pursues the group's mainstream private equity activities, primarily fund-of-fund management and sector-specialized structured products. They also have a presence in New York. Their clients are institutions and private individuals. Robeco's private equity team started managing funds-of-funds in 2001 and pioneered ESG-focused FoF in 2004. They reorganized mid-2009 when part of the team relocated to Zurich to cooperate closely with SAM. The Switzerland-based team focuses on the clean tech and sustainable sectors, as well as on direct private equity investments.
