Birk has been Interim President and a Director for The McKnight Foundation since August, 2005.
She is a Trustee for Hamline University and a Member of the Advisory Council of the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and the Minnesota Women's Economic Roundtable and a Director for the Minnesota Early Learning Foundation.
Most recently, she was Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Federated Insurance Cos from 1999 to 2005.
Prior to joining Federated Insurance, she was General Counsel for the Domestic Brokerage Group of American International Group, Inc. and City Attorney for The Saint Paul Cos.
Previously, she was President of the SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development, a Member of in the Mayor's Community Development Task Force and a Director for The International Alliance of Executive Women.
She received a BA degree in Philosophy from the University of Houston and a JD from the William Mitchell College of Law.
