John D. Arnold est le fondateur et l'unique actionnaire de Centaurus Energy Advisors, un hedge fund spécialisé dans le trading sur les énergies. En 2011, il est classé par le magazine Forbes au 336eme rang, avec une fortune évaluée à 3,3 milliards de dollars.
Diplômé de l'Université Vanderbilt de Nashville, John Arnold commence sa carrière en 1995 en tant que trader pour Enron. D'abord, dans le segment du trading du pétrole puis dans celui du gaz. II aurait fait gagner à la société 750 millions de dollars en 2001.
En 2002, lorsqu'Enron s'est effondré, John Arnold, fin connaisseur du trading des énergies crée Centaurus Energy Advisors. Pendant les premières années, le hedge fund affiche 240% de rendement annuel avant de « retomber » à 175% en 2005. Le fonds spéculatif qui gère 3 milliards de dollars d'actifs, compte parmi ses collaborateurs la fine fleur des négociants en énergie, comme Greg Whalley, l'ex-PDG d'Enron, ou encore Bill Perkins, Jeffrey Welch et Conrad Goerl, anciens de MotherRock.
En 2006, John Arnold a un ennemi juré, Brian Hunter, trader vedette du fonds Amaranth Advisors. Hunter prend des risques en pariant sur la hausse des cours du gaz, John Arnold fait exactement l'inverse en anticipant une baisse du prix, il aura raison. La prise de risque de Brian Hunter se traduit par la perte de 6 milliards de dollars et la faillite du fonds Amaranth Advisors. Centaurus est aux anges, le retour sur investissement est de 317% et deux milliards de dollars de bénéfice sont empochés directement par John Arnold, unique actionnaire du fond Centaurus.
