A la tête du très puissant groupe Viacom Inc, Sumner Redstone gère un véritable empire médias réunissant la Paramount Pictures Television, de nombreuses chaines câblées comme MTV Networks, The Movie Channel, Showtime, ainsi que des stations de radios parmi les plus diffusées au États-Unis.
Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, Sumner Redstone sert dans l'armée américaine, il décode pour le Pentagone les messages japonais. Après l'obtention de son diplôme de la prestigieuse Boston Latin School puis de Harvard en 1943, il est recruté comme juriste par le Ministère de la Justice à San Francisco avant de devenir avocat privé. Il exerce à Washington, DC puis à Boston.
Attiré par le business du cinéma, Sumner Redstone décide de rejoindre son père, propriétaire de la chaine de cinéma de plein air (drive in) National Amusements.
Après avoir largement développé National Amusements, Sumner Redstone amorce en 1964 la construction de complexes cinématographiques qu'il implante un peu partout sur le territoire américain. Persuadé que le meilleur moyen d'augmenter les marges passe par le contrôle du contenu, le magnat des médias commence à investir dans des sociétés de production cinématographique.
En 1987, Sumner Redstone organise l'OPA de National Amusements sur Viacom international, filiale de CBS et en prend le contrôle. C'est le début d'une série d'acquisitions qui connait son apogée dans les années quatre-vingts dix. En 1993, il acquiert Paramount Communications, société mère de Paramount Pictures.
En un temps record, Redstone parvient à empocher des millions de dollars grâce à l'achat et la revente de participations dans 20th Century-Fox, Columbia Pictures Entertainment, MGM / UA Entertainment, ou encore Orion.
En Décembre 2005, Paramount acquiert Dreamworks pour un montant estimé à 1,6 milliard de dollars.
Sous la houlette de Redstone, Viacom étend ses acquisitions à la télévision par câble, la radio, la musique et la production télévisuelle qui a produit, entre autres, Perry Mason, The Cosby Show ainsi que le show de Oprah Winfrey.
En 2005, Viacom International, se scinde en deux sociétés : Viacom et CBS Corp. Redstone contrôle plus de 70% des droits de vote de Viacom, filiale de National Amusements, l'entreprise familiale présidée par Shari Redstone, la fille de Sumner, et sans doute son futur successeur.
