Azim Premji fait ses études à Stanford. En 1966, à 21 ans, tout juste diplômé en ingénierie, la mort de son père l'oblige à interrompre ses études pour reprendre l'entreprise familiale à Bombay. Créée en 1945, la Western Vegetable Indian Products était à l'origine une entreprise familiale de transformation d'huile d'arachide.

Au cours des années 80, Azim Premji transforme l'entreprise qui fabriquait des savons et de l'huile de cuisine, en acteur mondial des services informatiques. Fidèle, il a conservé l'acronyme : Wipro. Il est propriétaire à 84% de l'entreprise cotée à Bombay et à New York. Il est classé par Forbes 36ème fortune de la planète avec 16,8 milliards de dollars qui le surnomme le « Bill Gates indien ».

L'entreprise emploie aujourd'hui 80 000 employés répartis dans le monde, dont 15 000 hors du territoire indien, et compte parmi ses clients Sony, Alcatel, Nokia, Siemens ou encore Cisco.

En quarante ans, Azim Premji a transformé une entreprise qui réalisait 2 millions de dollars de chiffre d'affaires dans l'alimentaire et les cosmétiques en un géant du software (1,1 milliard de dollars de chiffre d'affaires). La société a été certifiée CMM5, le plus haut niveau de maturité dans la qualité logicielle.

Wipro s'est organisé autour de cinq secteurs d'activité : l'industrie, la distribution, la santé, l'énergie, et les télécoms. Elle a racheté l'intégrateur Portugais Enabler, spécialisé dans la distribution. En France, Wipro a une bonne position en assurance et en banque d'affaires.

Azim Premji a crée sa Fondation et a co-présidé la réunion annuelle du Forum économique mondial à Davos en 2010.

He previously held positions such as Chairman of DigitasLBi SAS and Razorfish LLC, Director of AudienceScience, Inc. and Snap Technologies, Inc., and Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer of Vivaki Productions, Inc. and Publicis Groupe Media.
He was also an Independent Non-Executive Director of Automax Motors Ltd.
and Chief Strategist of Publicis Groupe SA. Tobaccowala has an undergraduate degree from the University of Mumbai and an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
