Diplômé en génie physique et en informatique de l'université d'Uppsala de Suède, Niklas Zennström poursuit également des études de gestion des affaires dans la même université avant d'effectuer sa dernière année de diplôme à l'université de Michigan aux États-Unis.

A son retour en Suède, Niklas Zennström débute sa carrière chez l'opérateur Tele2. Il y rencontre Janus Friis en 1998 . Ensemble, ils travaillent sur un projet d'échanges de fichiers peer 2 peer qui donnera naissance deux ans plus tard à Kazaa. En peu de temps, Kazaa rassemble des millions d'utilisateurs séduits par la fiabilité du logiciel et sa simplicité. Mais Kazaa se retrouve visé par de nombreuses plaintes pour violation de droits d'auteurs, Zennström finit par se résoudre à vendre l'entreprise à une société australienne immatriculée au Vanuatu.

En 2003, Niklas Zennström et son acolyte danois Janus Friis créent Skype, une solution qui permet aux utilisateurs de passer des appels téléphoniques par le biais d'internet. Les appels d'utilisateurs à utilisateurs sont gratuits, tandis que les appels vers les lignes téléphoniques fixes et les téléphones mobiles sont payants. Une révolution rendue possible grâce au talent de programmation de trois estoniens Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu et Jaan Tallinn.

En 2005 , la société de téléphonie par internet Skype et ses 70 millions d'utilisateurs dans le monde est vendue au N°1 des enchères en ligne eBay, pour une somme de 3,1 milliards de dollars. La transaction aurait rapporté quelques 330 millions d'euros à chacun de ses deux créateurs.

Trois ans après son lancement, Skype compte plus de 115 millions d'utilisateurs de par le monde.

En 2007, Zennström quitte la direction exécutive de l'entreprise pour s'occuper d'un autre projet : la télévision P2P nommée Joost, un logiciel permettant la distribution de programmes de télévision et d'autres formes de vidéos sur le web en utilisant la technologie du P2P.

Le lancement commercial de Joost intervient en mai 2007 et en octobre, la version Beta 1.0 est officiellement lancée.
