« Cap'tain Kirk » (« Capitaine Kirk ») est l'un des surnoms de Kirk Kerkorian. Fils d'immigrants arméniens, celui qui s'appelle alors Kerkor Kerkorian nait en 1917, en Californie. Il s'agit d'un authentique « self made man » : à 13 ans, son premier « job » est de laver les vitres, avant d'être boxeur puis joueur de poker professionnel.

La Seconde guerre mondiale le porte en Angleterre, où il devient pilote de chasse dans la Royal Air Force (RAF), l'armée de l'air britannique. Une expérience utile : dans les années 60, il lance une compagnie aérienne opérant depuis ses propres terrains à Las Vegas, dans le Nevada. Sa mise de fonds sera doublement amortie : non seulement il revendra sa compagnie pour plus de 100 M$ en 1968, mais il bâtira sur ses terres des hôtels et des casinos. Ce sera le socle de sa fortune.

En 1973, il achète les studios de cinéma moribonds MGM et lance des hôtels et casinos sous la marque MGM Mirage, le Mirage étant l'un de ses établissements, comme le Bellagio. Le cinéma n'est pas son truc, et il revend ses studios tout en conservant MGM Mirage. Coté en Bourse, ce grand noms des jeux (7,7 Mds$ de ventes en 2007) regroupe une vingtaine d'hôtels-casinos aux Etats-Unis et depuis peu à Macau, le Las Vegas chinois.

Kerkorian contrôle toujours plus de 50% de MGM Mirage grâce sa principale holding : Tracinda Corporation, dont il a formé le nom à partir des prénoms de ses deux filles, Tracy et Linda. Il a désormais les moyens de devenir « actionnaire activiste » et ne s'en prive pas. Tracinda visera des sociétés cotées traversant des difficultés financières, avec une prédilection pour les constructeurs automobiles US. Tracinda, qui était présent au capital de General Motors jusqu'en 2006, a tenté de racheter Chrysler lors de sa séparation d'avec l'allemand Daimler en 2007 et s'invite aujourd'hui chez Ford.

A près de 90 ans, Kirk Kerkorian n'est pas décidé à se retirer des affaires : après avoir approché Tesoro, il est récemment entré au capital d'une autre pétrolière, Delta Petroleum. De quoi faire rouler ses voitures...
