Joaquim Rivero évolue au sein du secteur immobilier depuis son plus jeune âge. Très tôt, il travaille avec son père dans sa société de construction. En 1997, il prend des participations dans la société immobilière espagnole Bami.
Joaquim Rivero est le président du conseil d'administration de Metrovacesa. Cette société leader du secteur immobilier espagnol détient Gecina, une société d'investissement immobilier cotée de droit français.
Jusqu'en février 2010, Joaquim Rivero est le président-directeur général de Gecina. Il détient un des plus beaux patrimoines immobiliers de France. Citons l'immeuble Vuitton des Champs Elysées, l'ancien immeuble du Figaro, rue du Louvre, ou encore plusieurs Club Med. Les actifs de Gecina sont majoritairement situés en banlieue parisienne et lyonnaise.
Mais les actionnaires de référence de Metrovacesa, Roman Sanahuja Pons, Bautista Soler Crespo et Joaquin Rivero ne s'entendent plus. En février 2007, ils concluent un accord de séparation. Par une série d'opérations, ils sont censés mettre fin à leur association dans Metrovacesa. Deux ans plus tard et une crise du secteur immobilier après, l'accord de séparation est devenu obsolète.
En juin 2009, Metrovacesa annonce qu'elle conserve sa participation de 26,9% dans Gecina et qu'elle renonce à l'échanger contre des actifs immobiliers appartenant à Gecina en France comme le prévoyait l'accord initial de séparation. Cet accord n'a plus lieu d'être dans la mesure où le promoteur immobilier a changé de propriétaire. La mésentente entre les actionnaires à l'origine du divorce n'est donc plus d'actualité. Metrovacesa, criblé par les dettes, a du céder en 2008 la majorité de son capital à ses banques créancières.
Les droits de vote conjoints de Joaquin Rivero et de l'investisseur espagnol Juan Bautista Soler sont limités à 20%. Ils détiennent à eux deux un tiers du capital de Gecina.
En 2009, Gecina acquiert 49% la société immobilière espagnole Bami Newco pour plus de 100 millions d'euros. Cette société foncière, spécialisée dans le marché des bureaux à Madrid, a pour principal actionnaire M. Rivero lui-même. L'opération immobilière qu'il mène pour l'achat de la foncière espagnole Bami est largement contestée par les actionnaires minoritaires qui portent plainte. Cette transaction a en effet généré 183 millions d'euros de dépréciations dans les comptes 2009 de Gecina.
En février 2010, suite à l'action en justice menée par les actionnaires minoritaires, Joaquim Rivero démissionne de son poste de PDG. En mai 2010, les actionnaires de Gecina rejettent majoritairement la résolution validant l'acquisition d'une participation de 49% dans la société immobilière espagnole Bami.
Le nouveau PDG de Gecina est Bernard Michel. Joaquim Rivero demeure actionnaire à 16% du groupe Gecina.
Courant mars 2012, Joaquin Rivero démissionne avec effet immédiat de ses fonctions d'administrateur chez Gecina.
