Sa proximité avec les hommes politiques du monde entier est de notoriété publique. Pourtant, peu d'informations filtrent sur le réseau de l'homme d'affaires le plus riche et le plus influent du Québec.

Propriétaire de Power Corporation, un groupe international de gestion de portefeuilles qu'il dirige avec ses deux enfants Paul Jr et André, Paul Desmarais a bâti un empire aussi puissant en Amérique du nord qu'en Europe.

A la mort de son grand père en 1926, sa mère et son oncle héritent de 25% des parts dans la ligne de chemin de fer qu'il exploitait pour transporter les mineurs de la ville de Sudbury. Son père, étudiant en droit, gère des scieries jusqu'à la crise de 1929 où elles fermeront. Il s'engage alors dans l'affaire laissée par son grand père et tente de l'adapter en créant une compagnie de bus. Mais après la seconde guerre mondiale, les mineurs abandonnent peu à peu le transport en commun, lui préférant la voiture.

En 1950, Paul Desmarais a 23 ans, il est en première année de droit. De retour à Sudbury, voyant que son père s'apprête à lâcher l'affaire familiale pour 18000 dollars, il décide de la racheter pour un dollar symbolique. La société est au plus mal, elle a accumulé des dettes et sa flotte de bus est vétuste. Paul décide d'emprunter de l'argent, assainit l'affaire familiale et consolide sa compagnie de bus.

Dans les années cinquante, Paul Desmarais réalise son premier gros coup en rachetant un fond qui avait perdu 50% de sa valeur en bourse. Trois semaines plus tard, le fonds était à nouveau valorisé 10 millions de dollars, soit le double de ce qu'il valait lors de son acquisition. L'opération lui rapportera près de trois millions de dollars.

Mais l'homme ne s'arrête pas là, il souhaite étendre ses acquisitions et opte pour une société d'assurances. Il négocie alors la Imperial Life à Toronto détenue par les anglais puis fusionne avec la Trans Canada Fund Corporation. L'homme clôture sa série d'acquisitions avec un coup théâtral en 1968 : la prise de contrôle de Power corp, une ancienne compagnie d'électricité transformée depuis en holding.

En 1979, Paul Desmarais entre au capital de Paribas à hauteur de 5%, en même temps que le belge Albert Frère qu'il rencontre pour la première fois en conseil d'administration. Ensemble, ils partiront à la conquête de l'Asie et de l'Amérique et même de la Chine à une époque où peu d'investisseurs étaient conscients de son potentiel. En France; le groupe de Paul Desmarais possède des participations dans Total, Suez, Lafarge et Pernod Ricard. Au Québec, il détient 70% de la presse écrite dont le très influent « La Presse ». En chine, il détient 5% de Citic, un conglomérat qui rassemble plusieurs filières : de l'électricité, des routes, de l'immobilier, des lignes aériennes, des fabricants d'acier et une mine de fer.

Guy Wyser-Pratte serait-il tombé dans la finance quand il était petit ? Il naît à Vichy en 1940, d'une mère autrichienne et d'un père français, Eugène, un financier spécialisé dans l'arbitrage. Il s'agit d'une technique tirant parti des imperfections des marchés en jouant, par exemple, sur la différence de prix d'une action cotée sur deux places différentes.

Après la guerre, son père s'installe à New-York puis fusionnera en 1967 son cabinet avec une grande maison de titres Bache & Co. Devenu citoyen américain, le jeune Guy passera plusieurs années au Vietnam dans le corps des Marines, en tant qu'instructeur. Puis il remise au vestiaire son uniforme de capitaine et suit les traces de son père. En 1971, il prend la tête du département d'arbitrage de Bache et publie plusieurs ouvrages sur le sujet.

A l'époque, Guy Wyser-Pratte fait alors partie des tous premiers à s'intéresser à l'activisme actionnarial. Le principe est simple : il s'agit d'utiliser la « démocratie capitaliste » au profit des actionnaires. Pratiquement, il repère une société cotée sous-valorisée – et souvent en 'petite forme' –, prend une part de son capital et fait pression pour que la direction améliore le retour aux actionnaires. Cessions, fusion, dividendes, rachat d'actions : tout les moyens sont bons.

Pionnier de l'activisme aux Etats-Unis, Guy Wyser-Pratte le transpose en Europe dès les années 90, misant sur le retard du Vieux continent en matière de gouvernement d'entreprise. Avec son holding new-yorkais Wyser-Pratte Management & Co, il s'attaque en 1996 à Strafor-Facom, un fabriquant français de mobilier de bureau et d'outillage, dont il obtient la scission. Viendra ensuite le tour de Taittinger, Vivarte, Prosodie, Ingenico, Valeo, Maurel & Prom et en Allemagne Mobilcom, Vossloh, Mannesmann, TUI...

Au total, Wyser-Pratte s'est colleté avec les dirigeants d'environ 80 sociétés cotées. Un métier qui rapporte : en moyenne, son retour annuel sur investissement varie entre 20 et 30%.
