Né en 1947 à Paris, le fondateur de Carmignac Gestion a grandi au Pérou, où son père, ancien diplomate, s’était reconverti dans l’import-export. Le jeune Edouard y fréquente un collège anglais jusqu’à l’âge de 12 ans. Titulaire d’une maitrise de sciences économiques, il décrochera un MBA à la Columbia University de New York en 1970. Deux ans plus tard, il devient associé à la banque d’investissement Blyth Eastman Dillon.

Alors qu’il na pas encore 30 ans, il accède au poste de sous-directeur à la Société financière européenne, en charge des financements miniers et énergétiques, deux secteurs qu’il juge « stimulants intellectuellement ». Agent de change chez Georges Hamant pendant les cinq années suivantes, il lance Pyramide Gestion en 1984, avant de quitter ses associés avec des indemnités conséquentes, qu’il investira dans la création de Carmignac Gestion. Il s’impliquera fortement dans la gestion des OPCVM.

Fan de pêche sous-marine et de polo, un sport qu’il aime à pratiquer outre-Manche car il « adore embrasser la reine Elizabeth II », Edouard Carmignac, surnommé « Doudou » par ses amis, n’hésite jamais à investir à contre-courant. Preuve en est, le fonds « Carmignac Patrimoine », qu’il gère en duo, a réussi l’exploit de terminer dans le vert la catastrophique année 2008 du secteur financier, marquée par la faillite de Lehman Brothers. Forte de plus de 10 milliards d’euros d’encours, sa société de gestion s’impose comme une des plus transparentes, étant l’une des rares de la place de Paris à publier les performances trimestrielles de ses fonds.

Banquier d'affaires, Edouard De Rothschild, fils de Guy De Rothschild, préside la Rothschild & Cie Banque, la célèbre banque d'affaires spécialisée dans la gestion institutionnelle et la gestion de patrimoine. Il est également Président du conseil de surveillance du journal Libération dont il est l'actionnaire de référence par l'intermédiaire du holding financier Jean Goujon qu'il contrôle.

Après une licence en droit obtenue à l'université d'Assas, Édouard de Rothschild obtient un MBA finances de la New York University avant de débuter en 1983 sa carrière chez "Wertheim and Co", petite banque de Wall Street. Deux ans plus tard, il œuvre pour le compte de la banque Eurofin, basée à Paris, avant d'intégrer en 1987 la Rothschild & Cie Banque en tant que directeur adjoint. Il est ensuite promu directeur, puis gérant, puis associé gérant et c'est en 2003 , qu'il en devient Président.

Féru de sports hippiques, une passion transmise par son père, Édouard de Rothschild s'implique pendant des années dans l'univers hippique, fin 2004, il succède à Jean-Luc Lagardère à la présidence de France Galop.

En 2006, grâce à un premier apport de 20 millions d'euros, Édouard de Rothschild devient l'actionnaire de référence du journal Libération. En Mars 2009 il est promu Président du conseil de surveillance de Libération, en remplacement d'Agnès Touraine. Il détient 38,8% du capital.

Fin décembre 2011, le banquier, propriétaire éleveur et cavalier de compétition - qui a récemment choisi la nationalité israélienne - quitte son poste à France Galop. C'est Bertrand Bélinguier qui reprend le flambeau.
