Tangshan est tristement célèbre pour le tremblement de terre de 1976 qui fit plus de 200 000 morts. Li Lu a alors dix ans. Il survit mais voit son père adoptif et nombreux de ses proches mourir sous les décombres.

Il se tourne alors vers l'éducation et étudie la physique à l'université de Nanjing. En 1989, il participe aux manifestations de la Place Tian'anmen.

Après la répression du mouvement, il doit s'exiler en France avant de poursuivre sa route vers le "rêve américain". Il étudie à l'Université de Columbia et en sort avec un triple diplôme en 1996.

Une fois diplômé, il travaille dans une banque d'investissement.

En 1997, il fonde son propre fonds d'investissement, Himalaya Capital Management.

Le Wall Street Journal affirme en août 2010 que Li Lu serait pressenti pour remplacer Warren Buffett la tête de Berkshire Hathaway.
