Dr. Wiley E.
Thompson was a professor for 31 years at New Mexico State University in the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He retired in June 1999.
During his tenure as professor at New Mexico State University, Wiley was principal investigator on 12 research programs with outside funding totaling over $12 million.
His research activities resulted in publishing over 200 research papers and graduating 18 doctoral students.
In 1987, he was awarded the Bromilow Award for Outstanding Research.
He also served as associate department head, department graduate program director, and director of the Electronic Vision Analysis Laboratory (EVAL).
Wiley’s research areas include optimization and optimal control, mathematical modeling of systems, analysis of interconnected systems, pattern recognition and image processing, multisensor vision systems and intelligent control, multisensor fusion and multitarget tracking, neural networks, and fuzzy logic control.
Wiley attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, receiving a B.S.
Degree in Applied Science in 1963.
His graduate work was at Michigan State University, E.
Lansing, Michigan, where he received his M.S.
and Ph.D.in Electrical Engineering in 1964 and 1968, respectively.
