Prior to joining The Hewlett Foundation, Mr. Fischer was a long-time staff writer for the San Jose Mercury News, where he most recently was the art critic.
In his years at the Mercury News, he was a general assignment and investigative reporter, and was part of the staff that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
Before that, he worked at newspapers in New Jersey and Texas, and at States News Service in Washington D.C.
