It specializes in corneal transplant; medical and surgical treatments of retina; oculoplastic surgery, ophthalmic oncology and pathology services; and medical contact lens service for infants and children. The company is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

Karocell Tissue Engineering AB was started in 2001 based on research from the Karolinska Institute since the end of the 1980's. It was founded by Professor Gunnar Kratz and Doctor Anders Boman to further develop their ideas within culturing of cells and tissue engineering. Tissue engineering, which is one of the fastest growing areas in medicine today, applies the principles of biology and engineering to the development of functional substitutes for damaged tissues. The objective is to have the engineered tissue to become integrated with the patient's own tissue. This can be achieved either by culturing cells in vitro for transplantation as an auto transplant or by guiding cells in vivo to regeneration. Karocell's core operations are; production of autologous cells, and management of a skin bank and a cell bank.
