Après des études à la Brown University de Rhode Island, Ted Turner travaille dans l'agence de panneaux publicitaires Turner advertising crée par son père. A 24 ans, il est promu directeur adjoint. Alors que la santé de son père se dégrade et les difficultés financières s'accumulent, Ted met toute son énergie à convaincre de nouveaux clients d'utiliser ses panneaux publicitaires. Son acharnement et sa force de persuasion finiront par payer. Il parvient à redresser la situation et fait même de Turner Advertising la plus importante entreprise de vente d'espaces publicitaires du sud est de l'Amérique.

Observant que les annonceurs se tournaient plus facilement vers les radios et les télévisions pour communiquer, Ted Turner acquiert une série de radios et tente de s'imposer sur le marché de la publicité, mais les droits de diffusions sont exorbitants et ne permettent pas de dégager des marges suffisantes. Qu'à cela ne tienne, Ted ne veut rien lâcher et acquiert en 1972 une petite station de télévision d'Atlanta.

En 1980, malgré le scepticisme du milieu des médias, Ted lance Cable News Network, (CNN.), la première chaine d'information en continu, une révolution un peu trop avant gardiste puisque CNN connaitra des difficultés jusqu'en 1985, elle couvre en direct la désintégration de la navette spatiale Challenger le 28 janvier 1986. A partir de ce moment, la chaine accroit peu à peu sa rentabilité mais c'est la couverture de la guerre du golf en 1991 qui propulsera CNN sur la scène internationale.

Ted Turner continue sa conquête des médias. En 1992, il met la main sur le studio de dessins animés Hannah Barbera puis sur Castle Rock Entertainment et Newline Cinema qui constituent quelques unes des constellations de Turner Broadcasting System (TBS).

En 1995, Warner débourse 7,5 milliards de dollars pour conclure la fusion avec Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), obtenant ainsi la chaîne CNN et Cartoon Network. Ted Turner, premier actionnaire est nommé vice président. Mais en 2002, la fusion avec Aol se passe mal et occasionne près de 45 milliards de pertes pour le seul quatrième trimestre. Ted Turner, pourtant toujours premier actionnaire renonce à ses fonctions au sein de Time Warner.

Le fondateur de CNN a certes révolutionné les médias mais il a également marqué de son empreinte la philanthropie. Donateur le plus généreux de tous les temps selon le New York Times, il se lance en 1991 dans les organisations philanthropiques, poussé par sa femme Jane Fonda avec qui il s’est marié la même année. Il fonde la Turner Family Foundation, et place à sa tête un ancien responsable de Greenpeace aux Etats-Unis.

En 1997, Turner va plus loin et s’engage à donner un milliard de dollars à l’ONU en versant 100 millions tous les ans durant une décennie. Ce milliard est destiné à aider les plus vulnérables dans différents domaines comme la lutte contre le paludisme, les mines anti-personnelles ou encore le réchauffement climatique. Il s’inscrit ainsi dans la droite lignée d’un J.D Rockefeller, qui fit don du terrain au bord de l’East River accueillant aujourd’hui le siège de l’organisation internationale, et au passage rentre dans l’Histoire avec la plus grande donation privée jamais réalisée.

Ses détracteurs, qui l’ont surnommé « The Mouth of the South » (que l’on peut traduire par « La Grande Gueule du Sud »), l'accusent de faire un coup médiatique dans l'unique but de recevoir le prix Nobel de la paix. Reste que suite à ce don exceptionnel, la Fondation pour l’ONU a été crée en 1998, avec pour président Ted Turner lui-même, qui œuvre depuis pour la défense des droits de l’Homme, la protection de l’environnement et la recherche médicale.
