Sidney Harman est le fondateur et le président de Harman International Inc, un fabricant de matériel audio et vidéo de haute qualité pour particuliers et professionnels.

Durant les années 1950, Harman travaille avec un ami ingénieur, Bernard Kardon, au sein de la société Bogen, qui est alors le premier fabricant de systèmes de sonorisation. Harman montre vite un intérêt pour la technologie audio à usage domestique. Il est persuadé que ce secteur est voué à se développer dans les années à venir et tente de persuader ses supérieurs de Bogen du potentiel de l'équipement stéréo domestique. Sans succès.

En 1953, Harman et Kardon décident de quitter la société pour créer leur propre entreprise. Harman-Kardon Inc est née. En 1956 Kardon prend sa retraite et Harman achète sa part de l'entreprise en pleine effervescence.

L'histoire de l'entreprise de Sidney Harman est passionnante. Dans les années 70, il vend 25% de sa participation à l'entreprise Aliments Behemoth Béatrice. C'est un fiasco. Au cours des années 1980, Harman est déterminé à reprendre le contrôle de l'entreprise et de restaurer sa gloire d'antan. Il met en place des stratégies de rationalisation et revoit l'organisation de la société nouvellement baptisée Harman International Industries.

Sa stratégie de gestion et la série d'acquisitions qu'il mène lui permettent de redynamiser l'entreprise et de s'imposer comme leader dans la niche de l'équipement audio et vidéo haut de gamme pour particuliers et professionnels.

En 1986, Harman International entre en Bourse sur le New York Stock Exchange.

Le titre de Docteur souvent attribué à Sidney Harman provient du doctorat en psychologie sociale qu'il a obtenu à l'Institut de l'Union de New York 1973, après avoir été diplômé de l'université de New York en 1939.

Sidney Harman manifeste un vif intérêt pour l'enseignement supérieur. De 1970 à 1973, il est président des Amis du Collège du Monde, une école expérimentale située à Long Island. Il fonde le Programme sur la technologie, les politiques publiques et le développement humain à l'école John F. Kennedy de l'Université d'Harvard.

Sidney Harman s'intéresse à tout et notamment à la politique. De 1977 à 1978, il est nommé Secrétaire adjoint du commerce des Etats-Unis par le président Jimmy Carter tout récemment élu.

Sidney Harman est décédé le 12 avril 2011 des suites d'une leucémie.
