A la tête de Quinn group, Sean Quinn est l'auteur d'une success story à l'irlandaise. 1ère fortune d'Irlande, il a construit dans la discrétion et loin de toute ostentation le groupe industriel et financier le plus performant d'Irlande.

A l'âge de 15 ans, Sean Quinn quitte l'école. Il emprunte 100 livres et commence l'extraction de gravier et de sable du terrain familial qu'il revend dans le voisinage. Avec un seul camion, Sean parvient difficilement à faire face à la demande. Les affaires démarrant bien, le jeune Sean commence à racheter les exploitations voisines.

Soutenue par une demande forte, l'activité est rapidement lancée. Sean diversifie sa production en s'intéressant au béton et au ciment. Vers le milieu des années quatre-vingts, il installe une première usine à Williamstown, dans le comté de Galway. En quelques années, il parvient à développer l'un des plus grands groupes de matériaux de construction dans le nord-ouest du pays.

En 1980, le groupe s'attaque au marché national. Une cimenterie est alors ouverte à Derrylyn. Elle est une des plus performantes du pays puisqu'elle affiche fièrement une production de 5 millions de tonnes par an. La production est diversifiée pour couvrir les besoins de construction d'un pays en plein boom économique.

Dans les années quatre-vingt-dix, le groupe connait une expansion tentaculaire. Il est désormais présent au delà du secteur des matériaux de construction. A la production de goudron pour les routes, des tuiles pour les maisons, s'ajoute le verre de conditionnement. Cette dernière activité constitue une telle réussite que le 2ème groupe de conditionnement de verre, « Ireland Glass », se voit contraint de fermer quelques années plus tard, laissant la voie libre au groupe Quinn.

En 2000, Sean Quinn ouvre sa deuxième cimenterie à Ballyconnell, dans le comté de Cavan, sa capacité de production trois fois supérieure à celle de Derrylyn. Sean Quinn peut compter sur le patriotisme économique des irlandais qui se tournent vers des entreprises nationales chaque fois qu'ils le peuvent.

En 1996, la branche services financiers du groupe est créée, elle lance Quinn-direct Insurance, une gamme de produits dans le domaine de l'assurance, qui après des débuts chaotiques, parvient à s'imposer à la troisième place derrière Hibernian et Axa.

Le groupe a des activités connexes, notamment un parc éolien d'une puissance de 18,5 mégawatts, adjacent au centre de production de Derrylin, ainsi qu'un site d'enfouissement moderne avec des aménagements à la pointe de la technologie, dans le comté d'Armagh.
