Après avoir été longtemps président de HAL Laboratory, il succède fin mai 2002 à Hiroshi Yamauchi au poste de président et chef de la direction de l'entreprise Nintendo, l'un des plus grand groupe de jeu vidéo au monde.

En 2007 et 2008, le New York Times Magazine ainsi que le magazine spécialisé dans la finance Barron's Magazine le considèrent comme l'un des meilleurs dirigeants d'entreprise au monde. Son salaire annuel est de 187 millions de yens, soit 1,7 million d'euros.

Carrière
Satoru Iwata nait le 6 décembre 1959 à Sapporo dans la préfecture de Hokkaidō au Japon. Il démontre très tôt sa passion pour la création de jeux vidéo. Originaire d'un environnement propice à la programmation, il produit des jeux électroniques chez lui durant sa scolarité. Iwata partage avec ses camarades de classes les quelques jeux de chiffres qu'il programme avec une calculatrice électronique.
