En 1987, il obtient un diplôme en génie mécanique à l'Université de technologie de Braunschweig puis en 1991, à l'Université RWTH d'Aachen.

Après ses études, Harald Krüger travaille d’abord comme assistant de recherche à l'Institut de dynamique des systèmes de vol du Centre aérospatial allemand d'Oberpfaffenhofen.

Puis il rejoint BMW en 1992 au sein de la division "Planification et technique de production". Il occupera divers postes de direction dans l'entreprise, grimpant progressivement les échelons.
En 1993, il travaille comme ingénieur de projet pour la construction de l’usine BMW de Spartanburg (États-Unis).
Ensuite, en 1995, il est nommé au poste de responsable du personnel chargé de la construction de véhicules expérimentaux au "Centre de recherche et d'innovation" de Munich (FIZ).

En 1997, Harald Krüger prend la tête du département "Planification stratégique de la production".
Puis, en 2000, il est nommé chef du département "Stratégies de production et communications".
Ensuite, à partir de 2003, il dirige la production de moteurs dans l’usine britannique BMW de Hams Hall.

En 2007, on lui propose le poste de responsable de l'intégration technique, qu'il accepte.

Enfin, grâce à son travail et ses réussites, le 1er décembre 2008, Harald Krüger est nommé au conseil de direction de BMW en tant que responsable du département des ressources humaines. Il est le plus jeune membre du conseil d'administration de BMW élu à l'époque.

En juillet 2012, Harald Krüger prend la responsabilité de MINI, Motorrad, Rolls-Royce et du service après-vente du groupe.
Puis, en avril 2013, il est nommé membre du conseil d'administration pour la production. Il accède au poste de directeur général le 13 mai 2015, succédant à Norbert Reithofer.

En mars 2017, Harald Krüger accompagne la chancelière Angela Merkel lors de sa première visite au président américain Donald Trump.

Parallèlement à ses activités, il est membre du conseil de surveillance de Deutsche Telekom depuis 2018. Il est également membre du conseil d'administration de l’Association allemande de l'industrie automobile (VDA) et de la Baden-Badener Unternehmer-Gespräche (BBUG).
